Food is the very basic need of human beings for their survival it is a source of energy for our daily chores, professional work, livelihood, health, body growth and decay all depend on the quality of food we consume daily. In developing countries such as Pakistan the provision of safe and healthy food has always remained a major challenge due to food safety and adulteration issues. Unhealthy and unhygienic intake of food is hazardous to the human body, which creates a burden on the already stretched healthcare system. Life expectancy is also low in the country due to unsafe and adulterated food items in the market.
In such circumstances, a regulatory body such as the KP Food Safety & Halal Food Authority (KPFS&HFA) was the need of the hour, to bring forth much-needed reforms in the food sector. In the last few years, the Authority has made a very good reputation by leaving a positive impact in terms of improving the premises, personal and food hygiene of food businesses in the province. This reflection of Authority’s hard work on the ground is even commended by the business community.
The availability of safe and wholesome food is a fundamental requirement for public health and social wellbeing. The quality of food offered in the market has a direct impact on human health, productivity, and trust in institutions. Challenges such as unsafe handling practices, adulteration, and non-compliance with food standards continue to pose serious risks and demand consistent regulatory oversight.
Islam places clear emphasis on the consumption of lawful and pure food. Allah Almighty states:
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ كُلُوا مِمَّا فِي الْأَرْضِ حَلَالًا طَيِّبًا
“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth that is lawful and pure.” (Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:168)
This guidance underscores the obligation to ensure that food is not only lawful but also safe and hygienic. Any compromise in food quality or safety is therefore a violation of both legal standards and moral values.
The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety & Halal Food Authority is mandated to regulate the food sector in order to protect public health and promote compliance with food safety and halal requirements. Our reform agenda focuses on strengthening inspection systems, improving laboratory capacity, ensuring fair and transparent enforcement, and encouraging preventive compliance rather than reactive action.
While the Authority will continue to discharge its responsibilities with firmness and impartiality, lasting improvement in the food sector requires shared responsibility. Food business operators, consumers, and society must collectively uphold ethical practices and respect the law. Through cooperation, awareness, and accountability, we can eliminate unsafe practices and build a food system that safeguards health and public confidence.
Our commitment is to ensure that the people of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have access to safe, hygienic, and lawful food, thereby contributing to a healthier society and a more responsible food economy for the future.
Regulate and monitor the food business in order to ensure provision of safe food.
